Haven Universe

Welcome back to another exciting season of “Saturday Night Alive” hosted by Haven Universe.  We are thrilled to rejoin former friends along with meeting some new friends as we begin our third season together.  As is our custom, we reviewed our name, Haven Universe, learning again that we all need a haven-a safe place.  For Christ followers, our haven is God.  He alone is our safe refuge.  We were reminded too that God, the Creator, made everything and everyone.  Universe reglects His magnificent, diverse creation all around us.  We learn from the Bible that God wants unity within the diverse.  Following God’s example of love, Haven Universe desires to welcome all.  We want to love and support each other, share our burdens together, and encourage one another in our special friendship with God.  Please join us.

Becoming God’s Friend-3rd Step-Choose

We have been talking about steps to becoming a friend with God.  We shared that the first step is to acknowledge our sin and selfishness and seek His forgiveness.  Following that, we must believe that Jesus came to earth to die for us in our place to atone for  our sin.  The Bible reminds us that we are made right with God through believing in Jesus’ finished work on the cross on our behalf (Romans 3:22).  The final step is to make a decision to choose Him as Savior and Lord of our lives.

We learned that God gives us the choice to worship and serve whomever or whatever we please.  It is up to each one of us.  We outlined three amazing reasons to choose Jesus as Savior and Lord:    1-No one will ever love me like He does; 2-No one else can forgive my sin and selfishness that separate me from Holy God; and 3-He is the only one who promises to send the Holy Spirit to live in me for guidance, comfort, and teaching.

The way to choose Jesus as Savior and Lord is through simple childlike faith and trust in what He did on the cross for me AND by willingly following Him all the days of my life.  I choose to spend time talking and listening to Him through prayer and reading the Bible.  Then I choose to trust and obey.  Romans 12:1 (Msg) says, “… Take your everyday, ordinary life-your sleeping, eating, going to (school) work, and walking around life-and place it before God as an offering..”  When I choose to give up my “self” and follow Jesus every day, God promises me the best life now and forever!!

Who will you choose as #1 in your life?  Choose wisely.

Becoming God’s Friend-2nd Step-Believe

Last month we learned that becoming God’s friend is as easy as a-,b-,c-.  The first step is to a- admit my sin and selfishness to God.  The Bible reminds me that, “…everyone has sinned…” (Rom. 3:23)  My sin is what separates me from perfect Holy God.  The good news is that God loves me so much that He made a way for me to be reconciled to Him.

The second step is to b- believe.  The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  (John 3:16)  Jesus came to earth to show us how to live and then ultimately to die a death that He did not deserve.  He died in my place.  He chose to die on the cross as the sacrificial Lamb of God to take away my sin and thus save me.  This is love far beyond my comprehension.  This is the love of my Savior.  Do you believe that Jesus died for you?

Next month, we will consider the third step in the process of becoming God’s friend, c-choose.

Becoming God’s Friend: 1st Step-Admit

Last month we learned about the joy we can experience when we obey Jesus’ command to love God and other people.  It is a joy that is independent of our circumstances, and it comes from a willful and continual reliance on God and obedience to Him.

This month we are focusing on becoming friends with God.  It’s as easy as a-, b-, c-, and the choice is mine.  The first step is a-admitting my sin and selfishness to Holy God.  Sin is the wall that separates me from Him.  The Bible says, “For everyone has sinned…” (Rom 3:23) and”…the wages of sin is death.” (Rom 6:23) Thankfully, God loves me so much that He made a way for me to be made right with Him.

Join us again next month to see just how God showed His great love for us and reconciled us to Himself.  We will learn about b-believing.

Love Leads to Joy

Last month I learned the “Good News” that God reached out to us with ultimate love when He gave his one and only Son Jesus to die as the only acceptable sacrifice for our sin and selfishness.  Believing in Jesus’ finished work on the cross on behalf of us and learning to love like Jesus leads to true happiness-JOY.  This is God’s promise of new life.

Come and learn more with us at the next Saturday Night Alive just how to experience more of Jesus’ joy.  It happens by re-prioritizing our lives and putting Jesus first, others next, and ourselves last.  This can best happen when we pray for God’s awesome Holy Spirit to help and encourage us.

HU Winter 2012 Mission Trip

SAN PEDRO SULA, WASHINGTON, D.C.–A few days ago, the Haven Universe missions team returned home from their third semi-annual mission trip to Honduras.  Our team, consisting of two board members CT and Chip Gordon, spent 1/6/2012-1/13/2012 in country working primarily on medical mission projects.  The team spent the first three days in Copan Ruinas where it has partnered up with a thriving local church to provide physical and psychiatric medical care to the community.  Dr. Gordon spent three days seeing patients averaging approximately 20 patients a day spread between the town of Copan and Las Mesas—a nearby rural mountain top community.  During this time, Chip spent time working with a team of engineers who are attempting to address a water quality problem in the Las Mesas community.

After our time in Copan Ruinas, the team drove to Puerto Cortes (a port city in the northern part of Honduras).  We spent a day there partnering with a not-for-profit organization called Cocal Gracias which runs a technical school in a suburban neighborhood of Puerto Cortes.  The team spent the day networking with Brian Rurak, Executive Director of Cocal Gracias, and his wife, Rina, as well as assisting Cocal Gracias with a drainage problem around their buildings.  This meant the manual shoveling of an entire dump truck load of earth.  It is the team’s hope that this will help the local community by reducing the amount of stagnate water and thus the mosquito population.

Following the team’s day and night in Puerto Cortes, they headed to San Pedro Sula—the industrial capital of Honduras and second largest city.  Haven Universe has partnered with Orphan Helpers, a not-for-profit organization that serves in government run orphanages in San Pedro Sula.  The Haven Universe team has been a liaison to the local healthcare community working to establish a multi-disciplinary clinic where children and adolescents from Nueva Esperanza (an orphanage for 0-12 year olds) and Mujeres Adolescentes (a center for abused and abandoned at risk teenage girls) can receive basic medical care from and provide access to sub specialty care as needed (including psychiatry, psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, etc).  This should result in a huge improvement in the quality of life for the kids.  By the end of the trip, basic guidelines for the clinic had been laid out and an implementation plan started.  God willing, within the next six weeks, the first girls from Mujeres Adolescentes will be seen in the clinic.  The clinic will be held weekly at the local public hospital, Catorina Rivas, in the Pediatrics department.  Between three and six patients will be evaluated every week until everyone in both centers has been seen.  The Haven Universe team wishes to thank the Honduran medical community for their interest in the project and generosity with their time and resources.

In addition to working on the creation of the multi-disciplinary clinic in San Pedro Sula, the Haven Universe team distributed six months worth of vitamins to each child in Nueva Esperanza and Mujeres Adolescentes.  We spent time working in a make shift medical clinic in a local homeless shelter and partnered with a local psychiatrist to consult on cases at Good Samaritan Catholic home for profoundly disabled individuals.

Overall, the trip was extremely successful and bore much fruit.  The team plans to return to Honduras June 21-29, 2012 and bring with them a team of approximately fifteen medical professionals, most from Arizona as they partner with H.E.R.O. (Humanitarian Efforts Reaching Out).

Our True Hope

Life is hard and unfair and can seem hopeless.  But our true hope is not in anyone or anything on this earth.  Our only true hope is in Jesus.  Over 2000 years ago, Jesus was born to bring hope to you and me.  When I admit my sin and selfishness to Holy God, believe Jesus died on the cross for me (and you), and accept Him as my Lord and Savior, then I am promised abundant and eternal life.  This is the good news of Jesus Christ, and it is available for all!  The Bible says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  In His great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope throught the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…”  (1 Peter 1:3).

Thank you God for giving us our only true hope; our hope is YOU!

Community-It’s All about the Relationships

God created us to live together in community, loving and serving one another.  Haven Universe is a loving, accepting community.  The Bible tells us to do four things together (Acts 2:42) in community: fellowship, eat, pray, and learn (from the Bible).  This is what we do at Haven Universe.  When we do these things together according to God’s plan, we can have “abundawonderful” life.

Experiencing Haven Universe Firsthand

A small group of young families and volunteers came and experienced the uniqueness of Haven Universe firsthand.  We felt the sense of a safe place (haven) while playing, learning, eating, talking and enjoying one another in community.  We learned that God did indeed make us all different and special.  God made everything (universe).  He (God) loves us and calls us to love Him and love one another (John 13:34).

God wants unity within the diverse (Haven Universe).  Come and join us for community, acceptance, and hope (in Jesus Christ).
